The last time I ran in a race of sorts was in 1954 in St. Aloysius School  in Vishakapatnam.

I was in Std.V then. I ran my little heart out confident that I would leave the competition way behind. I came last in that race. I so remember that. I can still see myself flailing my legs and arms furiously, refusing to believe what was happening as everyone else surged ahead spiritedly. Although I took to regular sports and games after that, I never ran any kind of sprint race ever again.

Some time in my forties things took a turn in my attitude towards competition . By then many things fell into place as wins and losses scattered in the things I ventured on. It dawned on me that running your fastest, doing your best, was what winning was all about. I haven’t looked back since then. And I can smile when I remember that race in 1954 when I came last but I ran my fastest.

And that’s the secret of being a winner in whatever one does – doing one’s best under the circumstances. And making the circumstances as favourable as possible for what one is doing.

At the end of every race or competition there is no regret regardless of what the results are if one has done one’s best. Of course there is some amount of disappointment if one does not officially “win” but that can be handled as life goes on and towards new challenges.

I am good now, doing what I can as well as I can and enjoying the running rather than worrying about the results.

Ah well, we live and learn!

But I will run that race too as I have for so many years already now.

Hope things are well and wonderful for you continue being a winner in whatever running you yourself are doing!

Take care. Love, Terry
