longer cane

My dear

Random thoughts on the Fourth Sunday of Easter.

We all like little stories so let me start off with one…

Dr Bloomfield, who was known for miraculous cures for arthritis, had a waiting room full of people when a little old lady, completely bent over in half, shuffled in slowly, leaning on her trusty cane.

When her turn came, she went into the doctor’s office slowly.

Amazingly, she emerged within 5 minutes completely erect with her head held high.

A woman in the waiting room who had witnessed all this, approached the little old lady and said,

“It’s a miracle! You walked in all bent in half….. and now you’re walking erect.

What did the doctor do?”

The little old lady smiled sweetly and said, “He gave me a longer cane!”

If we go to him crippled and bent and really down, that’s what God does for us too. He gives us a longer cane so that we can walk erect again.

If we are willing and open for an even bigger miracle, He might even suggest that we throw away the short cane altogether and walk tall on our own two feet.

Sad thing is that we sometimes get attached to our trusty canes and we get used to walking completely bent over in half like that little old lady. And we wonder at and envy others who, though living lives more challenging than the ones we ourselves live, go around walking tall and erect.

We must take that chance in faith. If you are all stooped and bent down and miserable and whatever, just stumble your way into God’s presence. And come out walking cane-less and tall. The crippled and the lame did that when Jesus touched and healed them.

He touches and heals us too… all we have to do is go to him in faith.
