My dear

Long time… and I hope things are well and wonderful for you..

An update on news about things here with me….

I was out of circulation for a while…

I was hospitalised  (six days : Jan.29th to Feb. 3rd) for acute – change that to excruciating – abdominal pain….

All FIR tests/X-Rays/Sonography were clear. On the fourth restlessly painful day after a CT-Scan – I was diagnosed to have a small (4mm) stone in my ureter. Ugly thing! Painful thing….

After about 20 IV feeds and 12 IV antibiotic drips and 15 painkillers administered in various ways and an absolutely mind-blowing explosive bowel clearance (a side-effect of 3 litres of some medicated liquid I had to take for the CT-Scan)…. I felt miraculous relief. Continued in the hospital for two more days ( more IV drips) and now I am back in the college.

It’s been a little over a month from all this now and I am almost back to being my “top of the pops” self… There will be betterer times ahead and I continue looking forward….

The background rhythm and music  somehow represents the fluctuating sharpness and  throbbing stretches of extended dullness with which the pain dominated my life while I was in the hospital. No, I was not in a position to dance to the music!

Getting back to my feet now… and with the music continuing, I am sure that I will be soon able to dance again!

More appropriate music and dancing to you that side..

Every human experience carries with it lessons and learnings that add to the storehouse of knowledge and wisdom that each one of us gathers  and benefits from over the years.

We can use that learning and wisdom to make for ourselves better lives in the years that are still to come….

I want to share with you things I have learnt from my recent admission to and  6-day stay in the hospital for diagnosis and treatment of a stone in the ureter.

1. There is such a thing as unbearable pain.

2.  A three-way IV canal embedded in the back of any hand limits the movement and dexterity of that particular hand.

3.  You cannot tie your pyjama string with only one hand.

4. In toilet manoeuvres your right hand cannot efficiently do

what  your left hand has been doing all your life.

5. A poster on the hospital wall said : “My grace is sufficient for you!”

That helped!

6. Even though it is good for health, karela is always bitter.

7. There are 18,964 drops in an IV bottle.

8. Saying “Go! Baby go!”  does not make  the IV drip go any faster.

9. Despite their colouring  IV drips do not come in flavours like pineapple and tender coconut.

10. By the time one bottle of IV saline gets completely dripped into you,

you have gone to the loo at least three times.

11. The nurses are not amused if you ask them to connect the IV drip directly to the toilet bowl.

12. If the position of your heart (e.g. when you are standing) is higher than

the position of the IV bottle then blood flows in reverse from your body into the IV tube.

That is very scary!

13. In hospitals, 5.30 am is the most appropriate time to be changing the bed linen.

You are generally woken up from a deep sleep so that this can be done.

14. Hospital staff find it particularly difficult to talk in Malayalam softly at night.

15. You should not sneeze while collecting a urine sample.

16. Enemas do not always work.

17. Kidney stones are not round and smooth.

18. When you are in constant pain you are not in a state to worry about getting bored.

19. Even though you may not like to do it, you must drink lots of water every day.

20. Even though you already know it, family and friends care a whole lot for you.

21. Suddenly feeling perfectly well is the most wonderful feeling in the world.

P.S.  It helps greatly if you have a sense of humour while you are going through it all !!

And the sense of humour helps when you are right on top of the world as well. I am glad I have that in reasonably large measure….

Just now there is a large jug of water on my table top and reminder notes  all over the place from students asking me to drink a lot of water . Fortunately the bathroom is just a kidney stone’s throw (30 feet) away!

All fairly well now … except for the usual occasional whisper from inside me that I should be paying some more attention to health things in my life!

And the rains are coming down more enthusiastically now…. that is a blessing I really enjoy!

Wondertimes and wonderthings to you too as life rolls on….

You take care too. love, Terry
