My dear

Besides rose and adenium, butterfly pea and other blooms in my careless garden there is also chilli and tomato, “valchi bhaji”, struggling banana, adolescent lime and infant roseapple. There is also a happy assortment of variant green plants that add a pleasant-spread lush to the otherwise cluttered backyard.

Not everything survives despite my care and attention. Domestic help and vagrant passersby sometimes pinch stuff and I have lost “kaddipatha” plants and whole “paan” plants. Sometimes marauding rats (real ones) nip off creepers and leave them for wasted dead.

One of my garden tragedies some time back was the loss of three tomatoes growing nicely. I used to proudly show them off to everyone who came to visit me.

One evening I saw and smiled in a fatherly way at them at about 5 pm. When I next went to look, at 5.30 pm, they were gone!

I had taken pictures one of them growing through different stages…. Thought I would share them with you.

Dim yellow flower..barely seen….. slow growing green promise….. yellow warming up glow….. deepening reddish tinge…

Ripening sunlight smartly almost there in full ripe red……..and…. GONE!!!! Someone pinched it !

The loss of something one has so lovingly cared for is upsetting, yes, but need not be tragic. More tomatoes grew in my garden after that. I tended them as caringly as I did the other three.

Fortunately these were not taken… and I shared them with here and there friends whose visits were timed right.

Still more grow and life goes on as it always does!

There are loads of chillies growing in my garden. Nobody takes away the chillies… and they grow on merrily.

Moral of the story: IF YOU DO NOT WANT TO BE TAKEN, BETTER TO BE A CHILLI THAN A TOMATO!

Whatever that means!!

All otherwise well and the counselling carries on busily.

Take care and stay well.

Love you, Terry
