My dear

Sharing with you an old exciting happening.

Friday, 8th October 2010.

That was quite a while ago but it is a date to remember for me.

The first flower bloomed in my little garden on that day.

Senecio Grahamii – a wild country sunflower named after a botanist (John Graham) who discovered it on the Khandala hill slopes. The botanist, I am told, is buried in a cemetery in one of our Khandala Jesuit villas….

I am sure that he too smiled contentedly at the bloom of this first flower in the little garden behind my counselling centre in St. Xavier’s College.

As flowers go it was not anything that would win a prize in a flower show. Nowhere near that! Very ordinary to look at. And about the same diameter as a 25 paise coin.

One would wonder at the fuss about sharing something so insignificant.

I think it was Tagore who said : “The big things in life are for everyone..

The little things are for those whom I love…”!

There is something special about a little first flower.

Like there is something special about a first anything!

And I am excited and happy about this first little yellow flower in all the green that bloomed comfortably outside my windows.

The little flower is hardly visible in this old picture but it is there, a little above and to the left of the big toe of my right foot!!

In the months following, the green grew luxuriantly and totally covered all of the grills on my windows.

And when I open my windows now my room has a lot if that soothing comforting nature look that is such a rare sight in a city like ours….

I just wanted to share that first flower in my little garden with you….

There have been many other blooms since then, flowers and vegetables and even fruit (bananas!). The garden keeps growing and glowing!

There have also been butterflies and tailor birds and squirrels…

Once upon a time that whole backyard was a convenient place for dumping rubble and debris and broken furniture. I am glad that I have done something to change that.

I guess one can work similar changes one’s life too!

From debris and rubble to green and bloom!

Lots of that in your own life too!

Take care. Love, Terry
