My dear

I know it is not proper to be making announcements about personal milestones but at my age I can afford to be quite shameless in something like this, at least!

I just celebrated my 70th birthday on July 25th.

A reasonably stretched out life up to now.

And I must admit…I have learned a lot as well as goofed up a lot over these many years…

The goof-ups are for occasional and usually private sharings…!

Here’s sharing one of the learnings with you….

                                          cid:002d01cb30a1$1fc7d950$0100007f@xaviersthe older you grow

                                        the more you become

                                                   of what you already are…..!!

                                                                       cid:002d01cb30a1$1fc7d950$0100007f@xavierscid:002d01cb30a1$1fc7d950$0100007f@xavierscid:002d01cb30a1$1fc7d950$0100007f@xaviers

I do not think that applies totally to the way one looks, though.

I remember being lean and straight-backed and blessed with quite a mop of black wavy hair…..

You may not believe this but I have photographic evidence for the same…

The years have passed graciously, and in that regard I have changed somewhat…. as you know and as you can see….(some have said that the old guy in the designer underpants does look a bit like me!)

But in many of the non-physical things it has happened to me too.

I have become more of what I already was …. and I am glad about that!

The way one spends the rest of one’s life depends, in a large manner, on the way one spends one’s NOW!!

Somewhere in the gospels there is a statement about “the best is yet to come… ”

I do not think it will come automatically, though. One must invest oneself in making that best happen…

And if we keep doing this then there will always be lots of wonderthings to be looking forward to…..

I am looking forward to my 73rd birthday.

I am looking forward to my 80th birthday even more ( July 25th, 2025). Please come over and celebrate with me. I will probably have retired by then and I will be able to spend more time with you.

Sorry about not having spent enough time with you over these many years – not visiting enough…. hardly making phone calls….

I have been pretty faithful and regular in keeping in touch with you by email though… and I hope you are glad about that!

I am waiting for it to rain again…

The rain, and particularly the  thunderstorms, remind me of childhood. We used to gather around mum and dad in their bedroom and huddle together as mum repeatedly invoked St. Barbara for protection from lightning and thunder. I was never sure whether the proper thing was to be scared or amused when mum kept repeating : “St. Barbara, pray for us” !

And if there was a lull in the thunder, one of us would run to the kitchen to put sugar in the milk and come back to distribute it to the rest of us in the bedroom….

Those were long ago days. We have all grown older since then and maybe become more or less of what we already were…..

More blessings on you as we all look forward to the “best that is yet to come”!

Love, Terry
