We all grow up especially rollicking carelessly and care-free through the effervescent teenage years.<\/p>\n
Freedom\u2026adventure\u2026challenges\u2026confident about knowing who you are and what you are doing\u2026living life cool and chic\u2026 and if you can sing and dance rap with bros and dudes you really are in there.<\/p>\n
Your individuality matters to you\u2026 your own space\u2026 your decisions\u2026 your choices\u2026 dress\u2026time\u2026courses\u2026junk food\u2026<\/p>\n
Your growing up is your very own personal adventure. And you would like to make your personal choices about how you go about it.<\/p>\n
Now and then you look back and wonder about whether things could have been different. Did you miss out on something? Could you make up for that missing out? Will you get a second chance?<\/p>\n
The good news is that we continue growing up and learning anew as we grow up.<\/p>\n

THINGS I WISH I\u2019D KNOWN AT 18<\/strong><\/p>\n That we do not grow up uniformly but in spots and streaks<\/p>\n so that we may be mentally mature but emotionally underdeveloped,<\/p>\n or have a good practical grasp but still lack spiritual depth;<\/p>\n and we must not make the mistake<\/p>\n of confusing our categories of grown-upness.<\/p>\n That candour in order to grow<\/p>\n is different from candour in order to hurt;<\/p>\n and putting someone right<\/p>\n is quite a different thing from putting someone down.<\/p>\n That the way to persuade someone in not to beckon him<\/p>\n to come and look at things from where you stand<\/p>\n but to move over to where he stands<\/p>\n and then try to walk hand in hand<\/p>\n to where both of you would like to stand.<\/p>\n That the best (and ultimately, the only) way to make a good impression,<\/p>\n is by becoming who you are,<\/p>\n and not by trying to conform<\/p>\n to anyone else\u2019s standard of what you ought to be.<\/p>\n That if you do not find pleasure in solitude,<\/p>\n you will not develop enough resources within yourself<\/p>\n to find genuine pleasure in company;<\/p>\n and conversely, if you do not find pleasure in\u00a0 company,<\/p>\n your solitude will be barren and involuted<\/p>\n rather than creative and expansive.<\/p>\n That wanting to be liked and admired<\/p>\n by persons whose opinions or characters you do not really respect<\/p>\n is the most common and pernicious form of prostitution in the world.<\/p>\n That in the deepest Platonic sense of the word,<\/p>\n you do not truly \u201cknow\u201d something until you act upon it;<\/p>\n and that \u201cknow thyself\u201d is a meaningless injunction<\/p>\n until and unless such knowledge compels you<\/p>\n to put it into action in immediate and practical terms.<\/p>\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Adapted from Sidney Harris<\/p>\n I was 18 so so long ago\u2026 and I really missed out on so much of this. Fortunately one can continue learning whatever age one is at.<\/p>\n And, thank God, now that I am over 72, I can confidently say that I have made up quite a bit with lessons picked up along the way.<\/p>\n You can do that too\u2026 just in case. Better to do that early, though.
