The statue is haunting and uncomfortable <\/strong><\/p>\n depicting a darkly shrouded figure <\/strong><\/p>\n lying huddled on a long park bench. <\/strong><\/p>\n From a distance, the figure could be anyone, <\/strong><\/p>\n and only on close examination <\/strong><\/p>\n are the tell-tale crucifixion wounds, <\/strong><\/p>\n visible on its exposed feet.<\/strong><\/p>\n Timothy Schmalz, the sculptor told the Catholic Register <\/strong><\/p>\n that his sculpture was inspired, in part, by a homeless man <\/strong><\/p>\n he saw lying on a sidewalk just before Christmas two years earlier.<\/strong><\/p>\n The December night when he spotted the homeless man <\/strong><\/p>\n was a particularly poignant moment, <\/strong><\/p>\n he said. \u201cMy instinctive thought was, <\/strong><\/p>\n that is Jesus Christ.
