Years ago the foundation was laid<\/p>\n
On it stood grand and homely, my college.<\/p>\n
Soon voices were heard<\/p>\n
Footsteps echoed –<\/p>\n
It had come alive!<\/p>\n
Amidst the Kaleidoscope of faces<\/p>\n
You could overlook that ordinary man,<\/p>\n
That gait,<\/p>\n
That diary in his hand,<\/p>\n
That smile.<\/p>\n
But it would be difficult.<\/p>\n
For surely you might go for a camp<\/p>\n
or join the SSL<\/p>\n
or play basketball<\/p>\n
or attend a poster-making session<\/p>\n
or try copywriting at X.I.C<\/p>\n
or backbend at Yoga sessions.<\/p>\n
The ordinary man suddenly did not seem ordinary.<\/p>\n
You hesitatingly ventured forth to the Centre<\/p>\n
Which your complacent self denied<\/p>\n
Its need for existence,<\/p>\n
And at the first hello<\/p>\n
You knew you would no longer be the same.<\/p>\n
Maybe you had coffee with him,<\/p>\n
or passed on a message<\/p>\n
You waved across the quadrangle<\/p>\n
For you had met him once.<\/p>\n
But the creaking door swung open<\/p>\n
To what seemed a safely locked up<\/p>\n
dim memory of defense-<\/p>\n
Suddenly you wanted to jump,<\/p>\n
Laugh,<\/p>\n
Do a jig!<\/p>\n
You had found a friend.<\/p>\n
That still moment would move on<\/p>\n
To many such moments to come.<\/p>\n
He laughs with you because you want to laugh,<\/p>\n
He gives you chocolates because that’s what you like,<\/p>\n
He gives you cards for that’s what you need.<\/p>\n
He never asks.<\/p>\n
You cannot shock him-<\/p>\n
The shrug is characteristic.<\/p>\n
You cannot beat him-<\/p>\n
The logic is invincible.<\/p>\n
But you can make him cry<\/p>\n
If you are hurting.<\/p>\n
Though he has his sentinels<\/p>\n
He battles with yours.<\/p>\n
And as the voices fade<\/p>\n
You see depths to the planes and angles<\/p>\n
Of the monumental foundation.<\/p>\n
