FROM SAMMY- 25th<\/sup> JULY 1987<\/p>\n

To Terry<\/p>\n

who wished a gift<\/p>\n

in rhyme<\/p>\n

Here’s something<\/p>\n

just so divine<\/p>\n

Penned by me<\/p>\n

It’s POETRY,<\/p>\n

if that’s what it’s capable to be! !<\/p>\n

1. You said you wished<\/p>\n

for a poem<\/p>\n

As a gift from me to you<\/p>\n

But Terry dear, if you must know<\/p>\n

I cannot rhyme a lime<\/p>\n

Be it ‘haiku’ or a ‘ballad’<\/p>\n

or a mournful ‘elegy’<\/p>\n

… be it Milton or Wordsworth<\/p>\n

or plain and simple Shelley<\/p>\n

I’m totally out of element<\/p>\n

I’m totally out of form<\/p>\n

When it comes to poetry,<\/p>\n

I’m a big horn!<\/p>\n

2. Still if you insist,<\/p>\n

I inflict you with this<\/p>\n

Perhaps you can use\/ disuse it<\/p>\n

As a tissue or a mat<\/p>\n

Or in some class,<\/p>\n

Where your students can learn<\/p>\n

How poetry can be aghast!<\/p>\n

3. To further carry on…<\/p>\n

This epic task you’ve set me…<\/p>\n

Which absolutely dreads me<\/p>\n

and creeps and crawls<\/p>\n

and twists my spine<\/p>\n

… inspiring me to do a rhyme<\/p>\n

…. or write a line<\/p>\n

in praise of thee<\/p>\n

whom psychologists consider<\/p>\n

the \u201cKing of their variety\u201d.<\/p>\n

4. This poem’s already<\/p>\n

reached its peak<\/p>\n

Seems to run into pages<\/p>\n

not worth to keep<\/p>\n

Perhaps another Illiad<\/p>\n

or Odessey begins today….<\/p>\n

To end in the murky<\/p>\n

waters of Backbay.<\/p>\n

5. Oh, but let’s be positive<\/p>\n

Who knows today’s<\/p>\n

changing public<\/p>\n

…. they may actually like this crap.<\/p>\n

And put it on the<\/p>\n

bestseller map.<\/p>\n

Where shall I be then<\/p>\n

In some glorious Manhattan heaven<\/p>\n

…..With all the glitterati….<\/p>\n

and big names<\/p>\n

mine shall reign.<\/p>\n

6. My own penthouse…<\/p>\n

butler…. and maid<\/p>\n

wardrobes…. and jewels<\/p>\n

Oh, what a craze!<\/p>\n

I’ll live a life of luxury….<\/p>\n

….scandals…. and fame…<\/p>\n

Wooing the masses<\/p>\n

with my charm<\/p>\n

and name.<\/p>\n

7. To end this tale<\/p>\n

short and simple<\/p>\n

I hope you’re glad<\/p>\n

I made an effort<\/p>\n

Pushing my pen<\/p>\n

Ruining this paper<\/p>\n

Writing some stuff<\/p>\n

Not worth to remember<\/p>\n

But writing poetry<\/p>\n

nevertheless<\/p>\n

Cause you wished me<\/p>\n
