O connie dear, ’tis terence here<\/p>\n
extremely heavy hearted<\/p>\n
the letter that he longed to write<\/p>\n
he never really started<\/p>\n
he thought about the things you said<\/p>\n
and wished \u2013 tho he were tired –<\/p>\n
to seek out unused pen and pad<\/p>\n
and write like one inspired<\/p>\n
the days flew by, the nights went too<\/p>\n
and all his resolution<\/p>\n
like new year promises we make<\/p>\n
they failed in execution<\/p>\n
no letter yet, you wait and wait<\/p>\n
in plain exasperation<\/p>\n
ten thousand postmen bring the mail –<\/p>\n
it’s just hallucination!<\/p>\n
Until tonight, this glorious night,<\/p>\n
when stars display their splendour<\/p>\n
I bravely pick up pad and pen<\/p>\n
and whisper: I surrender!<\/p>\n
Long distant miles a maiden waits<\/p>\n
in anxious expectation<\/p>\n
this page must I dispatch at once<\/p>\n
to charming destination.<\/p>\n
O postman quick, make haste, make speed<\/p>\n
for connie lies a-waiting<\/p>\n
her hopes that Terence is alive<\/p>\n
are fast evaporating!<\/p>\n
Well,here am I alive and well<\/p>\n
and full of youthful vigour<\/p>\n
no furrows etch the passing tide<\/p>\n
nor scars this life of rigour<\/p>\n
my health is fine, I work and dine<\/p>\n
to build up bone and muscle<\/p>\n
the doctor says all is in shape<\/p>\n
from brain to blood corpuscle.<\/p>\n
’tis true I’m busy day and night<\/p>\n
of work there is a-plenty<\/p>\n
sometimes I feel I need a day<\/p>\n
that lasts eight hours and twenty.<\/p>\n
Quite often I’m on a boat at sea<\/p>\n
my state it makes me shudder<\/p>\n
what good is ship with mast and sail<\/p>\n
if there’s no bloody rudder!<\/p>\n
Some weeks ago I acted in<\/p>\n
a play \u2013 it was a mystery<\/p>\n
’twas written by famed agatha<\/p>\n
(she’s better known as christie)<\/p>\n
’twas all about ten different men<\/p>\n
in island congregated<\/p>\n
and one by one by one of them<\/p>\n
are all assasinated!<\/p>\n
The play is done,we had our fun<\/p>\n
now back to serious labour<\/p>\n
it’s moral science books we write<\/p>\n
on god and man and neighbour.<\/p>\n
’tis not as though we’re busy through<\/p>\n
with work and work incessant<\/p>\n
we have our fun and humour too<\/p>\n
in manner effervescent.<\/p>\n
So much for me, now I from you<\/p>\n
must find out something dearie<\/p>\n
about your joys, your ups and downs<\/p>\n
I make a gentle query.<\/p>\n
How goes it there? Conditions fair<\/p>\n
in rain or stormy weather?<\/p>\n
Quite oft I find my thoughts turn to<\/p>\n
all nine of you together.<\/p>\n
So Joan is back within the fold<\/p>\n
your news left me astounded<\/p>\n
air-hostesses should fly up high<\/p>\n
not stay on earth a-grounded!<\/p>\n
Pray, tell how faireth mum and dad<\/p>\n
and Flo and Joan and Annie<\/p>\n
and Carol, Ian, Clarence too –<\/p>\n
in letters long and many.<\/p>\n
From Alan, Owen, not a word<\/p>\n
I think I have a notion<\/p>\n
that one above in Delhi waits<\/p>\n
the other’s on the ocean!<\/p>\n
I’m glad you spend your college days<\/p>\n
in living and in learning<\/p>\n
and learning by your own mistakes<\/p>\n
just which needs what discerning<\/p>\n
about the serious things you write<\/p>\n
be sure they’re no distraction<\/p>\n
to share my life with all you feel<\/p>\n
to me gives satisfaction<\/p>\n
but hark, ’tis time. I must be gone<\/p>\n
I feel I’ve taxed my IQ<\/p>\n
accept this way a brother says:<\/p>\n
look dear, how much I like you!<\/p>\n
For thee I’d scale the highest peak<\/p>\n
or fight with forms gigantic<\/p>\n
