AT TIMES I STAND
At times I stand
on my own
shell strewn silent shores
and watch the sailings by
of other ships and boats.
Your own
I see so often
sleek and swift
wind filled sails
hurrying to destinies
beyond the rim
of safe and sound.
You’re bolder now
and more in charge
your own captain
and first mate
familiar with
the winds and seas
friend now of night stars
that help chart course
across calm or choppy seas.
And yes,
sometimes it is good
to sail alone
and take the risks
that make for better growing.
It is good too
to sometimes sail
with others
to learn and teach
new seas and shores
new distances and dreams.
Sea and sky
are much too big
to adventure on
all alone.
I’m glad we share
at least some bits
of our sailings…
We spend
at least some time
on common shores.
It’s wonderful
being with you. ( Shona 23 Feb ’96)
